Longview, Texas
Led by Longview Mayor Jay Dean, the City of Longview and the Mayor’s Task Force on Fitness launched Get Fit Longview a community-based campaign to raise awareness around obesity issues and to encourage citizens and families to become more physically fit. According to Mayor Dean “it’s important to take the lead and help jumpstart those lifestyle changes that lead to better nutrition and exercise habits.” More than 800 citizens throughout the city of Longview were invited to be a part of the kick-off luncheon.
The Get Fit Longview initiative is made possible by a grant from Governor Rick Perry’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and works closely with a collation of community partners including Good Shepherd Medical Center, Eastman Chemical Company, Longview Independent School District and the local chamber of commerce. The Mayor’s Task Force on Fitness has created a website and will be encouraging citizens to visit the site frequently and learn how they can be a part of helping Longview get fit and staying fit.
Through the coordination of the Mayor’s office, the Task Force on Fitness will be providing ongoing opportunities for education and wellness programs will be offered to community leaders, schools and the faith leaders. Longview citizens feel this is an ideal opportunity to help make a difference as a community and to rally around a common and significant issue.
