I have run in a few 5Ks, 10ks and 1/2 marathons and was extremely impressed with the pre-race communication, professionalism, planning and post-race activities. The event was by far one of the best put together events that I have experienced. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to participate.
"For over a year I worked from home remotely for a company based in New Jersey. Working from home has its benefits, but I missed the advantages of a good campus with stairwells and long hallways that introduced daily exercise without a scheduled work-out. Since joining the Texas Department of State Health Services, I've enjoyed a different world. In a given day I'll get 15-20 minutes of walking that I never could, before. I walk to and from the parking garage, I walk around the campus, I take the stairs, and there are signs on the very walls encouraging me. And if that's not enough, there are GetFitTexas! and Texas Round-Up creating new, fun little incentives and reminders. Who knew a work environment could be like this? My basic fitness is increasing. Stairwells no longer leave me so winded that I have to wait to speak again. Walking a block or two is no longer painful. As minor as this may seem, going from zero fitness and zero exercise to even 15 minutes a day has made a big difference to me. I am grateful to have such a supportive environment! Now that I'm back on my feet (literally!) I'm able to do so much more."
I love the Texas Round-Up program and talk it up at my agency every chance I get. We have won the state agency challenge in our category in the past and plan to win again this year. Personally, I feel fortunate to be involved as a state employee in such a great program and commend Governor Perry and the Texas Round-Up folks for your efforts. In the past five years, I have moved from walking/running in 5Ks and 10Ks to my first half-marathon last weekend. The Texas Round-Up program played a big role in challenging and inspiring me and I plan to be back there next year running with the pack.
