2009 Fit Texan: Denny Martin

"In October 2007, I found myself at my heaviest weight: 395 pounds. I was carrying too much weight for the past 40 years of my life and I resolved to lose it. Within the next three months, I moved to Austin and began a medially-supervised weight loss program that involved no surgery. I started seeing results and my doctors took me off the 10 or so daily medications I'd been taking for my diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Although I'm not at my goal weight yet, I've lost more than 153 pounds, and I hope to lose another 40 to 50 pounds."

2009 Fit Family: Scooter Dubec and Family

Joseph "Scooter" Dubec is a 42 year old husband and father of three children. For more than 20 years, Schooter has battled with his weight, topping the scales at 303 pounds in December 2007. With his children, Sarah, Allison, and Christian all being very active, playing with them and being involved in their interests was not an option.

In early 2008 Scooter learned that his glucose levels were extremely high and that he was diabetic. In the year that followed, Scooter has lost 115 pounds. He is now at a healthy weight, his blood levels are normal, his sleep apnea is gone, and he is now able to ride his bike with his children and take walks with the family.

"I cannot say my journey over the past year was easy," Scooter says. "It took a lot of hard work and planning to achieve my goals. But I can tell you, it was well worth it. I would like everyone to know that the journey, though tough, is achievable."
